Ted Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/melissa_marshall_talk_nerdy_to_me#t-224404

The argument of this talk was that people are often scared or uninterested in what scientists have to say, not because of the content but because of how it is presented. She calls for scientists to present their findings in an accessible way to everyday people. Throughout her presentations she gives advice to scientists and engineers on how to do that. She says they should first relate their research to our everyday lives and use more visuals and less words so whoever they are presenting to can understand the topic. She starts out the presentation with ethos. She makes herself credible by saying that she had experience with engineering students and when she finally understood what they were talking about it was like "Alice in Wonderland". By doing this she kind of makes herself seem empathetic to the audience in the sense that she has been through what they have been through, so they will listen to her solution.  In addition to this she tries to use humor to get her point across at the end by summarizing what she had to say into an equation. She does not really play on any of the audiences emotions, unless humor is considered an emotion.

The purpose of this presentation was to try to get scientists and engineers to be able to communicate their ideas to everyday people. She says that their ideas would be much better received if they would put it into everyday language and make them engaging.

Mr. Hyde: Chapter 1 description
Dr. Jekyll: Chapter 3 description

Analysis:

These two descriptions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde show the two in almost opposite lights. Mr. Hyde is showed as mysterious as there is no real solid description of him. The little actual description that is given is predominantly negative, as it says that he is deformed. In contrast Dr. Jekyll is given a very elaborate and specific description. He is painted as stylish and having a smooth face. The similarity between these two paragraphs is that at the end of Dr. Jekyll's description when Mr. Emerson asks about his will and Dr. Jekyll attempts to cut off what he is asking about. This little part at the end adds a little mystery behind Dr. Jekyll just like the mystery of Mr. Hyde. In addition to this Dr. Jekyll is being described by someone who has a positive view of him which translates into the positive description that he gets. While Mr. Hyde is being described by someone who has had a negative experience with him.

Dr. Jekyll:
I am Social
I have a high standing in society and am well respected
I am very wealthy and give money to charity
I would not hurt anyone
We are not the same
I am kind
Mr. Hyde:
I am Quiet
I have not had good experiences with those around me
I am very wealthy
I have killed people
We are not the same
I am a murderer

This poem shows the contrast between the two sides of dr. Jekyll. The top is how he shows himself to others while the bottom is his other side. The contrast between the two are created in the story between the different descriptions given to them by other characters. The end lines of the poem show the ultimate difference of the cbaracters.
